The Freight Chart interacts with the Sales Orders form to provide users with accurate freight rates, and provide an easy way to update freight charge changes in one place.
Overview
Each Product Line should have a record for each Zone for that Product Line, with unique and non-overlapping "Distance Start" and "Distance End" values for defining where the Zone starts and stops, and a "Standard (Freight) Rate". Since you can put "Freight Distance" on each Company record, which is copied to each Quote/Order when you create an order, users can determine which Zone the order is being delivered to simply by comparing the mileage.
In the example below, the remaining fields, which are "customizable fields", have been customized (see the topic "Custom Fields" for how to do that) to multiply the Standard Rate value by a percentage to automatically increase the Freight based on the number of items being shipped (You may, of course, have other criteria for breaking down shipping rates). Of course you could simply use the Custom Fields feature to rename the fields to something that makes sense for each additional freight entry, and then manually enter the additional rates for the Product Line / Zone.
Adding Freight on an Order To add the correct Freight amount to an order, the user simply clicks the "Freight Charge" button the Charges tab of the order, which switches the view to the Freight Chart tab in the Sales Department:
Note that only the Freight Chart records for the matching Product line (Service Carts) are displayed in the Navigator:
Since the Freight distance for this customer is 63 miles (from the Freight Distance field above the Freight Charge on the Order), the user clicks on the Zone A record (0 to 200 miles), then clicks on the button next to the number of items for this order, which is eight. This selects the Freight Charge (74.75) and returns the user to the Order tab, putting the Freight amount into the Freight Charge field -->>
The process is fully automating, giving the sales person the correct Freight charge with only two mouse clicks.
